Academics: Partnership, Desire for Children and Realisation

Working Paper 100

In Austria, people with an academic qualification have significantly fewer children than people with a lower level of formal education. When investigating the underlying causes, it becomes clear that there is a fundamental desire to have children, but that its realisation is considered rather unrealistic in medium term. Using multivariate regression models the contentment with the current partnership can be demonstrated as well as a negative influence of temporary employment on the subjective probability of realisation.

Division of Household Tasks in Partnership

Forschungsbericht 50

How do couples divide up their household chores? What ideas do young people have? And how is it possible to be satisfied with a sharing that is perceived as unfair? Within an online survey, we analyzed data of 1,577 people between 16 and 88 years. Although the study replicates the familiar phenomenon of a higher workload for women, it also recognises generational differences. Also, feelings seem to matter: people who receive more emotional attention of their partner report greater satisfaction with their sharing of household tasks.
